WILDLIFE AND BURNING ALERT!
This is the time of year when everyone is cleaning up yards and burning leaves/trash as well as cutting down large areas of high grass. Please remember the trash piles and high grass is a haven for wildlife to have their young. Keeper of the Wild takes in many burned orphans each season as well as many injured by cutting blades and weed eaters. Please be extremely careful when cutting or burning. It's a very painful way to die and injuries can be severe.
Beth Mowder, Vice President of Keeper of the Wild, reported that she took in a litter of baby opossums yesterday from Johns Island which came out of a brush pile that was set on fire. The mom was with them and she ran out once the fire reached her, dropping 6 of her babies. "I'm sure there were more but either they were able to hang on to her or they burned. Six were pulled out but they all have burned ears, feet and their whiskers are singed. The burn/smoke smell is so strong. Other rehabbers get baby bunnies in often under the same circumstances.", said Beth.
